Event Description
The mission of Ensemble Perihipsous is to investigate music and other arts from the decades surrounding 1800, when ideas of the Sublime so strongly influence artistic expression, and presenting this art to the pubic in performance and educational events. Peri hypsous, or “On the Sublime,” is a treatise by Longinus about expressions of sublime things, and became the foundational work for the emerging field of aesthetics in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Ensemble Perihipsous performs on instruments modeled upon those of the period, and following performing techniques from the time the pieces were composed (Historically Informed Performance, or HIP). Our programs couple works by well-known composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn with related lesser-known works and composers, including pieces that have not been performed in over 200 years. Furthermore, Ensemble Perihipsous collaborates with experts in poetry, theatre, visual arts, and film, thereby broadening the cultural-historical context of our activities. As Rochester’s first professional period orchestra, Ensemble Perihipsous seeks to broaden the knowledge and experience of the Rochester music and arts lover with historically-informed performances of familiar masterpieces and rarely heard works, and present these works alongside other artistic expressions from the same time.
